How To A Make Star Jar with Solar Fairy Lights
I can’t get enough of solar lights, you guys! I’m like a moth drawn to a flame. There’s just something magical about tiny lights in a glass jar that makes me get all starry eyed and mesmerized. So today I’ll show you how to make a Star Jar with solar fairy lights. It’s really easy, I didn’t even use glue!
I think it makes the perfect little addition to an outside dinner party or BBQ. If I had stairs leading up to our imaginary covered front porch, I’d totally line the edges of the stairs with these Star Jars. How pretty would that be! For now, I’m using it on our picnic table for those evenings we eat outside.
This is going to be the shortest post I’ve ever done on a project because it is THAT easy. 🙂
Overview
Time: 5 minutes
Difficulty: Easy!!!

- A string of solar lights. I got mine on Amazon for about $5 a string. I think they are cheaper around Christmas time. I LOVE THEM. They are on a tiny copper wire and have 120 tiny bulbs. I actually bought them around Christmas time and wrapped our tree trunks with them, but I had some leftover so I’m putting these string lights to use!
- Glass jar with cork lid. I got mine at Target for $5 and they called it a terrarium, but you can use any glass jar with the proper lid. I’ve seen a variety of sizes at Hobby Lobby, too.
Instructions
Well I just don’t know if you’re skilled enough for this (read in a sarcastic voice)….
- Unravel your wire of string lights and kind of “fluff” it up so the wires are tangled into a fluffy ball of wire and lights.
- Stuff the ball of solar lights into the glass jar, leaving the solar panel with a little bit of wire outside the jar.
- Push the cork lid onto the glass jar, over the wire. The cork should be soft enough to push on the jar even though the wire is coming out of the jar, too.
- Set the solar panel on the cork lid, turn it on, and wait for the magic to begin! (Don’t forget to take off the paper tag like I did.)
Was that easy or what?
I put our Star Jar outside on the old picnic table, and it looks great. It makes me want to grab some lemonade, a light blanket, and sit outside listening to the hum of a warm summer night.
No need to use any glue to set the solar panel on the lid. The reason for this is…well there was no need for it, but also it would mean you couldn’t push the button on the underside of the case to turn the lights on and off.
Please share your version of this project with us if you make something similar. Let me know what you thought or leave some photos of your star jar in the comments below.

Love your solar light jar, but I
thought maybe there can be another way to disguise the black solar panel on top. If I can come up with an idea I will try it,

Hi Catherine! I agree, I would love to see that solar panel disappear. If you come up with a bright idea, I’d love to see it! Thanks for your comment! 🙂
