I’ve been wanting to do a tutorial on a piece of home decor that is also a secret hiding place for your little valuables. I finally found something that is inexpensive, easy and fast! Read below to see what supplies you need to make this Secret Stash Mirror – Dollar Store DIY project.
You don’t need a lot of supplies for this project. And none of it is expensive, either! No tools required!
This project took me about 15 minutes in all!
Here’s what you’ll need to gather together:
Supplies
- Dollar Store Mirror
- Dollar Store Kids Puzzle Tin
- E6000 Craft Glue
- Spray Paint (optional)
I found my mirror at the dollar store. They have had these mirrors for quite some time and seem to be a regularly stocked item at my local store. Plus there are about 4 or 5 styles you can choose from.
If you aren’t happy with the colors of the mirrors, then I suggest spray painting them a color that goes with your current style of decor.
I chose a couple mirrors that I knew would conceal that puzzle tin well. You want the edges of the mirror to extend beyond the puzzle tin, so it’s in the dark shadow behind it, and not sticking out on the side.
Instructions on Assembling the Secret Stash Mirror
1. Super glue the puzzle tin onto the back of the mirror.
I like E6000 glue because it sticks to almost all surfaces. It does take some time to set up completely – 24 hours, I believe.
But honestly, most women I know are busy, so it’s kind of nice that you can do this project in 5 minute sessions!
Gluing the lid of the tin onto the mirror is my preference. I did it that way just in case I couldn’t hang the mirror by it’s keyhole and instead had to screw the puzzle tin onto the wall.
Press and hold the tin on the mirror for about 30 seconds. Then just put a book or something heavy on it.
Let it sit for 24 hours to dry and set up permanently.
2. Next I spray painted the back of the mirror black, with the tin already glued on.
Painting it the same color as the back of the mirror helps conceal the tin better. Now it just blends in with the back and hides in the shadows.
Make sure you don’t get over spray on the front edges of the mirror. I probably did, but I’ll never know because the front is already silver and distressed black.
Let your spray paint dry overnight so you don’t scratch when you’re playing around with your secret stash. Plus, hanging it on the wall will nick your fresh paint if it’s too soft.
3. Fill the tin with something you want to keep hidden!
This is a good hiding place for emergency cash, prescriptions, jewelry, gifts for someone, passports, candy, whatever you can think of!
4. Hang your new Secret Stash Mirror on the wall!
The dollar store mirror I bought already has a keyhole for hanging, so just set a nail in the wall, and hang the mirror on it.
I looked at if from the side several times, and I cannot see the tin now that it is painted black.
It totally blends in!
