How much do you know about success as a Surface Pattern Designer?
Are you ready for a side-hustle or even a full-blown career as a surface pattern designer?
Take the quiz above to see how you rate on four essential elements of your success.
What is Surface Pattern Design?
Surface pattern design is simply designing repeating patterns that can be applied to anything as decoration. Fabric, Clothing, Bags, Backpacks, Shower Curtains, Blankets, Socks, Wall Art, you name it.
The most well-known example of surface pattern design is for fabric. Fabric designers create a repeating pattern which is applied to whatever type of fabric they choose.
These repeating designs can be applied to anything, and there are entire companies that exist to print your custom design on their products!
It’s a really fun thing to get into, whether it’s as a hobby, a side-hustle for a little extra income, or a full-blown career.
Print Your Designs On Fabric!
A very popular company that will print your designs onto fabric is called Spoonflower.
It’s so simple to make your own custom fabric with Spoonflower!
- You just upload your design
- Choose the fabric
- Order some for yourself (no minimum yardage quantities – you can even buy an 8″x8″ sample or a fat quarter)
- Or make it for sale for other people to purchase! (you’ll get a percentage of the sale anytime someone buys your design)
Where Do You Learn How to Become A Surface Pattern Designer?
I’m sure there are several courses out there, but I took Bonnie Christine’s Immersion course.
Whether your a beginner who doesn’t know the first thing about creating a design, or whether you’re an expert with Adobe Illustrator, you’re going to learn the exact roadmap for your path to success.
Bonnie Christine’s Immersion Course teaches you about:
- creating designs from your sketches, paintings, or photographs
- honing your unique style
- creating design collections
- getting licensed by a company
- building your business
- finding the customers who want to buy everything you make!
- creating multiple streams of income that make money while you sleep
- outlining your path to success with clear actionable steps
My Experience with the Immersion course
I took the Immersion course because I wanted to learn Illustrator, and I knew that one of these days when I had the time, I would expand my products by creating my own collections. Although I haven’t started focusing on that just yet. Because I have some other blogging goals that I need to achieve first before I dive into creating those streams of income.
Before Immersion, I had no clue how to use Illustrator.
Now I can take my photographs and turn them into fabric designs!
I can scan my sketches and my paintings and vectorize them, too, so they can be repeating patterns.
Here is a fabric design I made from photographing gummy bears. How fun is that?
Not only can I make the designs, but I have a clear roadmap and steps for making income from this new and fun world. ๐
What is Bonnie Christine like?
Well, you should take her free course to find out!
She’s offering a free course, “The Secrets to Success in Surface Pattern Design” right now!!
If you’re reading this, the free workshop is still open.
It’s only open once a year, so save your spot right now.
Bonnie Christine is seriously the most kind-hearted, genuine, and down-to-earth teacher. And everything she does is to get her students the success they are working for. In fact, I was just on the zoom training call for her Immersion course launch and she was explaining how they decide on what is in the course.
When they just re-recorded the entire course they would ask the question – Does this help the student’s success? If the answer is yes, then they proceed, and if it doesn’t then they cut that section.
All this to say, I really appreciate Bonnie’s approach. She doesn’t just add content to make it longer. She only adds content that adds true value.
What Are Your Goals?
What do you want to accomplish?
The sky is the limit, girl! Do you want to make an $100 extra per month to cover your electric bill?

Or maybe you want to go all-in and build a surface design company that will employ and provide for many employees and their families someday?
The world of surface pattern design is wide enough and varied enough for you.
As Bonnie likes to say, “There is room for YOU.” ๐
