How to Use Farmhouse Baskets as Craft Storage.
A while back I was on a mission to find cheap metal baskets with which I could help organize our house and all our STUFF. I found some cute rustic wire baskets for dirt cheap and bought 6 of them! I didn’t yet know what the plan was but I knew they’d come in handy. (Spoken like a true hoarder, right?)
Well sure enough, as I began painting furniture in more detailed colorful patterns, I started collecting more and more craft paint. These farmhouse baskets became the perfect little wall storage unit for my craft paint. Now I can see all the colors easily and they are stored right above my work space, on the wall. Hanging baskets on the wall is just about the easiest way to create storage, short of buying a new dresser or cabinetry.

Overview:
Time: 1 hour
Cost: $12 to $50 depending on your baskets
Difficulty: Easy
Supplies:
- 6 Rustic Wire Baskets.
- Decorative Upholstery Nails, 1 pkg.
- Hammer, if necessary.
You don’t need much for this project! Just a few baskets and some nails. I bought my baskets on an amazing sale about a year ago. I looked them up today and they are kind of expensive in my opinion, considering their size and sturdiness. I think I paid a couple bucks each. They seem to be running about $11 a piece now.
That’s why I’d recommend looking at your local dollar store for some cheap wire baskets. Another place at which I always have good luck finding awesome metal baskets is Hobby Lobby. Hit them up when all the metal storage is 50% off and you’ll get some decent prices. They do those sales at least once a month, I believe.
How To Hang The Baskets
I rarely use an actual tape measure or level to hang things on the wall. I just eye it and go for it! Sometimes I have to adjust. So if you don’t have a good eye for straight lines then I recommend getting out some painters tape and using that to level off the top edge of your baskets.
You can place a piece of tape across the wall, using a level to make sure it’s… well….level. Then use that tape to mark your nail holes. That way your baskets hanging side by side will line up perfectly. I did 3 rows of baskets, so if you do the same you’ll be doing 3 pieces of tape running horizontally.
Tap the upholstery nails into the wall, but not too far! You’ll need it to stick out far enough so the basket can sit on the nail. Hang the baskets on the nail, and then you can tap the nails in further.
The baskets I bought are wire and very flexible. They are sturdy enough to hold my little 2oz. bottles of paint but they would probably start bending if I put anything heavier in them. Plus, I think the nails would start to pull out of the wall. If you are concerned about your baskets coming off the wall and hurting your kids, pets, belongings, etc, then you can always screw them into the wall studs for a stronger hold.
De-Clutter Your Craft Area
I’ll be using these baskets to store my craft paint. I have so many of these little bottles and my collection is growing. I’m afraid it won’t be long until it’s outgrown these baskets!
If you like this idea of using rustic baskets to create storage, then you might like the wire baskets organizer I made for our kitchen. It now holds all our kitchen towels and freed up a drawer for us to get stuff off the counter and out of sight.
